SANTA MARTA

DESCRIPTION:
The city of Santa Marta hides the vestiges of the oldest native peoples of South America who inhabited the area; nestled at the foot of the highest coastal mountain in the world (the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta), it exalts itself by being the oldest city in Colombia. In past centuries in the midst of apocalypses and bankruptcies Santa Marta came out afloat. The city had its best moments with the construction of the railroad and its use in the banana business at the beginning of the 20th century. The comforts and technologies imported by the North Americans burst into the Samarian daily life, an ephemeral illusion ended by the union conflicts.
The old town of Santa Marta was very deteriorated, and in the last years some houses, facades and churches have been trying to recover. The city is undergoing a change, the restaurants seek to attract attention with new dishes, clothing stores are varied and curious, the night bars with terraces and all kinds of music will make you stop, especially for the so-called Plaza de los Novios and the night walk along the harbor. You will love the area, and we recommend you not to go to bed without passing by the bar La Puerta, an unforgettable place with authentic paintings.
Tourism is reborn as a redeeming activity where even today are still sitting their hopes.
